Cherilyn started her career at Aviva and now heads up an operational Financial Crime Compliance team at Aviva Investors.
Having a mentor helped me achieve my full potential and build my confidence.
My career initially started at Aviva back in 1989 when I joined the in-house legal team in Life & Pensions. Over the years I took on various roles across a number of the legal functions and was always willing to get involved in projects to broaden my knowledge and skill set. This gave me an insight into different parts of the Aviva Group and helped me to build my network of contacts.
It was while being seconded onto a project for the Alternative Income Solutions business (involving looking at financial crime and anti-money laundering risks) that I discovered this area of the business really interested me. It was time for a career change after 25 years, so I studied for a professional exam in financial crime and when the opportunity arose, I was asked to create a new financial crime team. Having a mentor during this period really helped to build my confidence, achieve my full potential, step outside my comfort zone and undertake tasks that might seem overwhelming at first.
